| Some years ago, the influential family of a prisoner at the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon in Central Pennsylvania felt that the drab prison was oppressively grim for prisoners and visitors alike. She arranged with a Pennsylvania gallery to have a number of art prints by the famous illustrators NC Wyeth and Andrew Wyeth loaned to the prison to adorn the visiting room. The Wyeth family of artists has a Pennsylvania base and studios in Bucks County. SCI-Huntingdon received 12 fine, limited edition, extra large sized color prints of famous works by the two renown artists. The collection was conservatively worth $50,000.00. If Central Pennsylvania is anything it is devoid of culture. Huntingdon is clod-city. Art in Huntingdon County is an interior in the pickup truck. Making matters worse, the oafs running SCI-Huntingdon have the cultural refinement of a snuff spit-cup. They had no idea who the Wythes were and couldn't distinguish a valuable art print from a centerfold. The "education" department thought the prints were cute and got the carpentry shop to hack up some scrap flooring to simulate picture frames and some prisoners did their best to frame the prints. Eventually most of the unruined prints were hung in the prison visiting room. After a few years prints started to disappear. Obviously, not every member of the prison staff was completely ignorant. The value of the prints was $2000 to $8000 apiece. One prisoner who was delighted with the prints, suggested to the prison administration that the prints be identified. He said that they could be decently framed and tagged with small labels identifying the artist, title and the significance of the piece so that persons in the visiting room could better appreciate them. The prison administration, then run by Freedy "The Shoe Salesman" Frank, scoffed. What did Freddy care about valuable art and, anyhow, what gall for a mere prisoner to make a suggestion to the mighty wizard! More time went passed. More prints disappeared. At current market values about $45,000 worth of art has vanished into the bowels of SCI-Huntingdon or into the homes of its executives. It's a scandal. Nobody in the corrupt Department of Corrections cares. But if you happen to notice some nice 60 inch Wyeth prints offered on ebay, you might want to check if the seller has SCI- Huntingdon connections. |
