Protect Yourself Online

Most of your problems online are cause by Microsoft's software. Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser is obviously defective. It's so poorly written that for years it's been the continual plaything of hackers and rogues. The browser should be replaced with something that works; something that actually performs as it should.

Microsoft's email program is no better. Outlook Express is the cause of many/most email attacks because it's so badly engineered; corporate profits over corporate integrity.

If you have trouble with spam, spyware, viruses, worms and so forth, I urge you consider some of the programs or "applications" I've listed below.

Our website has been the constant victim of malicious Internet attacks. Guards, cops and other petty officials are notoriously vindictive. Everyday they try to injure us with viruses so we've become pretty adept at self-defense. Every citizen should defend himself against his government, the cops and officialdom are your enemies. These folks want to harm you.

Information: PC World magazine is an excellent source of accurate, honest and unbiased information about computer problems and Internet dangers. I recommend it. Their homepage is www.pcworld.com. Subscription information for the monthly magazine is available by email at pcwcustserv@cdsfulfillment.com or at www.pcworld.com/customer. Inexpensive subscriptions are available for a few dollars a year from:

    Sun Subscriptions
    915 Densmore Drive
    Winter Park, Florida 32792
    407-677-5941

They also have hundreds of other discount subscriptions which make great gifts for prisoners, but no email address or URL is available.
  • Browser: The first priority is to dump Microsoft's defective Internet Explorer. I recommend the now very well received Foxfire by Mozilla. Versions are free online from several sources. Check Google for a list.
  • Spam/email: Email is the biggest source of annoyance and infection. To protect yourself from viruses, I recommend AVG by Grisoft. It's another free program and may be downloaded off line.

To prevent the hijacking of your computer so that it sends out unwanted email both to you and to those in your address book, you may want to consider ZoneAlarm Pro.

  • Patches: If you're into the endless chore of trying to patch up Microsoft's leaky canoe, you have to visit the evil empire itself, but expect Microsoft to put spyware on your computer for its own nefarious corporate ends. You may also consult PC World Magazine's list.
  • printer ink: The biggest expense to many computer users is the unreasonable cost of ink for the printer. The profits that printer-makers don't get out of you when you buy the printer, they gouge when you buy supplies. You may want to try using a discount supplier such as inkfarm.com, 1-800-INKFARM. I saw an ad for a remanufactured cartridge for less that $9.

We have no interest in any of these firms and derive no revenue or benefit from them.
