Torture and Abuse
America's Distorted Morality
By: G.G. Stoctay, PhD

The United States long projected itself as a nation of high ideals and decency. We didn't always live up to the goodness that we preached, but the great majority of Americans thought of themselves and "good" people who didn't do bad things.

The unity of Christian fundamentalism and political conservatism has ended that era of decency. Extremist Republicans have ushered in the start of a new Dark Age. A small majority of voters have allowed or encouraged a profound and evil distortion in the American national morality.

The two issues which most clearly define the rise of evil in America are torture and secret imprisonment. Bad politicians try to justify and excuse torturing prisoners and imprisoning people in secret. Such evil conduct simply cannot be justified or excused. It is far beyond the fundamental values that the great majority of Americans have long held to be essential.

Certainly George W. Bush is an evil man doing evil things for evil motives. So is his vice president and much of the rest of his Republican administration. But such extremists require the vocal collaboration of bad persons in Congress.

The worst of these is Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska. Not only does he approve of torture and secret imprisonment, but he's in the pocket of big business. He allowed executives of big oil companies to lie about how they were gouging the public. Senator Stevens wouldn't allow the big oilmen to be sworn in so that they could be prosecuted for their lies. He's an evil man and a bad American.

Ted Stevens isn't the only Republican senator who supports torture and secret imprisonment. Most of the extremist conservatives think that such un-American conduct is legitimate. Jeff Sessions of Alabama is almost as evil as Senator Stevens. He, too supports torture and secret imprisonment. He represents the most extremist element in America. There is nothing decent about him.

TORTURE

Other United States Senators support the torture of prisoners. They may try to justify it or rationalize it, but the bottom line is that these men (ALL REPUBLICANS) think that torturing prisoners is a good things to do. They include:
Colorado's Wayne Allard
Kansas' Pat Roberts
Mississippi's Thad Cochran
Missouri's Christiphor S. Bond
Oklahoma's Tom Coburn and Inhofe and
Texas' John Cornyn

These nine Republicans have distorted American values. If they represent you and your state, we strongly encourage you to vote them out of office.

SECRET IMPRISONMENT

Senators Stevens and Sessions aren't the only Republican senators to support the practice of imprisoning persons in secret and without legal counsel. Like other evil totalitarian governments, some of the most extreme conservative (that means Fascist) politicians think that the indecent and un-American practice of denying basic rights to prisoners and their loved ones can be justified. They are:
Arizona's Jon Kyl
Florida's Mel Martinez
Georgia's Saxby Chanbliss and Jonny Isakson
Louisiana's David Vitter
North Carolina's Richard Burr and
South Carolina's Jim DeMint

If these extremists represent you or your state, we urge you to vote them out of office. Decent persons do not advocate indecent and un-American conduct. They don't try to justify bad deeds because of their supposedly good ends.

Regardless of political party or religious mythology, America had a core of values based on decent treatment and regard for the individual, the worth of one citizen against the government. We shouldn't allow a small majority of fanatics to destroy our core values.
