Wexford Health Sources is the greedy corporation that's supposed to provide healthcare to prisoners in much of Pennsylvania as well as in several other states. Everywhere, it's the same story. Sick and injured prisoners are not receiving the care they need. The inmates in Florida fare no better than anyplace else. In the Sunshine State where damage from the sun is a common health problem, Wexford won't dispense sunscreen or zinc oxide unless the prisoner already has cancer! And lots of them do. There's a young man in the DeSoto Correctional Facility doing six years for a minor domestic dispute. While doing compulsory heavy lifting and heavy labor building the prison's new facility, he (along with other men) developed hernias. Besides everything else, the hernias can strangle intestines and even cause sterilization. Wexford refuses to provide treatment to reduce the hernias. Prisoners aren't worth the expense to their profit margin! The men must languish in pain and danger. William W., an inmate in the same prison, went to the medical department a year ago with a lump on his neck. Nothing was done. By the time it was discovered that he suffered from advanved lymphoma, he simply vanished. Officials floated the story that he'd suddenly been transferred to another facility. We wonder if the other facility might not be potters field. Some of the prisoners' families in Florida are talking about filing suit to assure decent medical care for all prisoners. We support such an action. Better yet, the prison systems should be requiring Wexford to stop the cruel and unusual punishment.
