Burlington Coat Factory's
Phony Cop

By: Kenny Kennedy

Don't shop at the Burlington Coat Factory! While I can't say much about other stores, I know about the outlet in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania at 1090 Union Deposit Road; defiantly avoid that place. They are exploitative bullies.

Not long ago one of our voluntaries, "Mrs. I," bought a mattress covering at the Burlington store in Harrisburg. She seldom used the firm, it was unfriendly, but she happened to be close-by; a mistake you shouldn't repeat. After paying cash, she tried to leave, but was stopped near the exit by an alarm. Sometimes a cashier fails to remove a tag which may set off an exit alarm. Not this time. The tag had been removed and the alarm was simply false.

Enter Steve Ostat, the fellow acting as a security guard. He proved to be a bully and a lying cop want-t'-be. Steve Ostat made a long, loud and embarrassing show of rooting through the bulky package finding nothing. He made Mrs. I so uncomfortable that she changed her mind. She demanded a refund. She would never return and would shop someplace where customers are treated with respect and dignity.

The customer's request to see a manager was refused, but Steve Ostat became progressively more aggressive and domineering. He pretended he was a cop and threatened to arrest the Mrs. I for disorderly conduct if she failed to leave the store with her purchase. Complaining was not allowed!

Steve Ostat was NOT a cop, just a bully.

Burlington Coat Factory has a "policy" of refusing to make refunds. That's enough reason not to shop there. Even junk shops should stand behind the things they sell. In this case, the customer hadn't even gotten out of the store before she demanded her cash back. Burlington should have made good. Don't you make the same mistake.

What kind of people does Burlington Coat Factory hire as security thugs? Steve Ostat was certainly a very bad choice. When the customer complained to customer service, she was connected to a rude, unhelpful man apparently in Washington, DC. She got no relief and was simply more irritated. While the district manager was more forthcoming, he defended the store's Scrooge policy of no refunds and tried to cover-up the fact that Steve Ostat wasn't really a cop. The district manager said that Steve Ostat worked for the Dauphin County Sheriff. The sheriff's office denied it saying that he might have worked for the domestic relations office.

Whatever Steve Ostat may be, we know that for Burlington's sake and his own ego, he tried to intimidate a customer from exercising her free speech right of expressing a legitimate complaint.

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is not a place to live and certainly not a place to shop. Take your money anywhere else. Harrisburg sucks! One of the reasons is firms like Burlington Coat Factory and persons like Steve Ostat.
