You Know MANY Prisoners
By: Roberta Webster

If you are an "average" citizen of Pennsylvania, and you know 100 people, at least three of them are prisoners of one sort or another: actually in prison, on parole or on probation. A staggering 100,000+ persons in Pennsylvania are in state and federal prisons, in local jails and lock-ups. Another 66,500 are or state or county parole and at least another 113,000 are on probation or similar control.

Across the United States this insane epidemic has made prisoners out of 6,600,000 of our citizens, one in every thirty- seven adults. America is becoming a totalitarian nation. More than any other society on the earth, we have turned to imprisonment and bondage to address ordinary social problems.

On one side we support tens of thousands of cops of every stripe. On the other side, we support tens of thousands of prisoners of one stripe or another. We have created a society of class; brutes at both extremes.

Imprisonment is not a rational answer to all our society's difficulties.
