The State Correctional Institution at Smithfield in Huntingdon County in Central Pennsylvania is one of those backwards looking prisons which lacks both good management and the programs necessary to help prisoners improve themselves. One of Smithfield's greatest shortcomings is an organization or voice for it's hundreds of lifers.
The life prisoners are, on the whole, the best-behaved and most progressive men in prison. In Pennsylvania they are hopeless because there's no reasonable possibility of their ever being released. They are helpless because most of them have long since been abandoned by their families and friends. The least these men need is a support group within prison, a group where they can express themselves, do good works and develop a little pride. Smithfield fails to provide that simple necessity. We urge interested citizens to form a support group for these forgotten men. Individually, a few of the lifers at Smithfield have provided material, which we offer here. |
