Mental Illness
By: Sage Schott-Reed

I went onto your site looking for a phone number for SCI Pine Grove. A young man who used to hang out with my daughter has been trying to contact me. The phone keeps cutting out when I try to accept the call.*

I was amazed at your comments and insight regarding the various SCIs [Pennsylvania state prisons]. I agree that it's a shame about these young people. Most have mental illnesses and either don't have access to help or don't have someone in their lives who cares enough to get them help.

The young man I'm referring to has had a very difficult life. He continued throughout his teens to make extremely poor choices. He hurt a lot of people. He's now paying the price.

I think we really want to help these young men and women. We need to do it before they reach the age of 18 and are locked away. We have to insist upon proper and timely mental health care, as well as providing the proper support once they are released from incarceration.

*We suggested she try entering *87 to overcome the block that Global Tel*Link, the phone racket, slaps on some numbers.
