Long Period In
Unheated Cell
By: Sandra Feigley

"This is now the TWELFTH DAY1 that there has been no heat on AA-Block. The overnight temperature last night was 33 degrees. It was 28 degrees the night before. You can bet that if it was the Superintendent's2 home that had no heat, a mob of lackeys3 would have been summoned in overtime to repair the problem. The men on AA-Block need heat, too.

This is the second grievance4 on this problem. There has been no improvement."

EDITORIAL FOOTNOTES

1 The period without heat actually continued for almost 13 days during November and December while temperatures fell into the twenties and snow flurried.
2 At the time of the grievance, Benjamin Varner was the prison superintendent.
3 A guy named Donald Reihart is in charge of prison maintenance. He seems to be about as competent as the rest of the staff. Believe me, there's a reason they're not in private industry. Dozens of "craftsmen" (janitors/handymen) work for Reihart. These are highly paid, but not highly skilled people. One of the plumbers is an especially inept public servant. In addition to paid employees, there is a whole brigade of prisoner-slaves who are required to maintain the Superintendent's mansion. The house itself is provided free of charge by us generous taxpayers.
4 The first grievance was submitted on the fifth day of the crisis. It was not answered and a week later this second complaint was filed.
