Mother's Problems
With "Ion Scanner"

By: Roxann

I live in Denver, Colorado and my husband is currently in the feds in Florence, Colorado. He's been in there a little over a year. I work a full time job plus put in overtime so that I may have extra money to drive down there every weekend to visit him.

In many cases, visits keep a prisoner's mind on the path to doing better in there as well as outside.

Recently, they put the ion drug scanner test in the prison. I have tested positive 2 weekends in a row. The first time I had to leave for 48 hours. The second time I had to leave for 30 days.

At the first episode, I was told that I might have touched something that had an illegal substance on it, such as papers, money, etc. So, the following week, I wore gloves dealing with the papers and money. I even went as far as sanitizing the whole house and car.

When I returned to visit the following weekend I just knew I was gonna pass. To my bad luck, I flunked again, that time not to return for 30 days!

I think that the tests are set-ups to keep you from your loved ones. I feel that if they think we're carrying something into the prison, then maybe after we fail, they should ask us to give permission for a strip search. See, when it comes to your loved one, you'll go to that extent.

Not only do they keep us away, but they fail to realize they keep their kids away, too. I have a one year-old daughter. She has really not been around her dad, only on weekend visits. This is the time she gets to establish a relationship with her dad so she knows that he does care. I look forward to just watching my husband feed and play with his daughter.

I feel that the prison needs to throw out the ion scanner and find another method of screening. We can't help the fact that our world is infested with drugs and innocent people have to be guilty for the doings of others.

Editor: The obvious fact is that the gadget simply doesn't work. The prisons know it doesn't work. They use it maliciously to harm and humiliate visitors. The practice should be stopped.
