Rockview Prison's
Staff of "Coon-Catchers"

By: Elsa Mason

Racism is a serious problem in all Pennsylvania's prisons. At the Rockview prison in Centre County in the very middle of Pennsylvania, the staff has proudly earned the name Coon-Catchers. Members of the staff have been going out of their way to falsify, "adjust" and otherwise tamper with the records and papers of some Afro-American prisoners in order to force them to spend more time in prison. Apparently some Hispanics have been victimized in the same way.

It's fairly common for the staff of Pennsylvania's many prisons to discriminate against minorities with punishment, disrespect and abuses. Whites are somewhat less victimized, but unfair and punitive treatment is a Pennsylvania way of life.
