Rockview Staff
Reveals Facts

By: Brooks Klein

Just outside State College, in the very center of Pennsylvania, is the Rockview state prison. Since it was built its been the location for the state's infamous death house and home of the executioners. That gives you some idea about what the joint is like. There was once a gigantic prison farm, cannery, forestry camp and other facilities on the sprawling grounds. It was once a hub of educational and legal opportunities. Now a fellow named Robert W. Meyers is the superintendent.

A lot can be said about SCI-Rockview. Not much of it good. As a source within the prison, I can point out a few matters. Consider the Superintendent's wife. She reportedly had inmates from the prison plant and maintain her personal vegetable garden at the residence provided to her and the Superintendent free of charge by the taxpayers. The inmates were required to use seed bought and paid for by the prison greenhouse.

At Christmas time, she reportedly had inmates from the greenhouse make wreaths with which she decorated her residence. Additionally, she provided the prisoner-made wreaths to her local Christian church. The wreaths were made from pine cuttings which had been intended for decoration in the prison cellblocks.

An audit of chow hall (kitchen) expenditures exposed enormous shortages. Approximately $15,000 worth of meats (mostly ham) could not be found. There's a well-known story at the prison of one of the staff members who pays a food supplier to have the delivery truck deliver some of the shipment to his home before going to the prison. Little is checked at the prison.

It's well known that the prison staff utilizes "services" within the prison where the labor is provided by prisoners for almost no cost. Dry-cleaning of clothing and uniforms, auto detailing and repair, haircuts and so forth are but a few of the benefits. The staff pays a tiny pittance and no state sales tax is charged. The only state tax paid in the prison is paid by prisoners at their pathetic commissary.

More dangerous and illegal things are also going on. Asbestos which was removed by prisoners from inmate housing areas was stuffed into plastic trash bags and heaped in an old chicken coop outside the perimeter fence rather than being disposed of in accordance with federal regulations and DER guidelines. It creates an ongoing hazard.

At one time, tons of toxic materials including lead and lead paints and chemicals was simply buried in ground which was later used to grow food fed to prisoners and staff.

The recitation could go on and on, but this gives the reader some idea of what the prison is really doing.
