The www.prisoners.com website is going to publish information about Pennsylvania state employees. The website will publish the names, salaries and related facts about parole agents and prison guards. It's all public information available in the Pennsylvania State Library in Harrisburg for over eighty years. The guards don't want us taxpayers to know who they are or what they get paid or where they work. They obviously have a lot to hide. A few of the parole officers and guards with the most guilty consciences or the most terror, sued the website to keep it from providing you with public information about them. Rochelle S. Friedman, a judge of the Commonwealth Court ordered the website not to publish the public information. She didn't like the fact that the website gives a voice to prisoners, aims to benefit them and their families, and criticize police and government. The website's constitutional rights of freedom of the press and freedom of speech, along with your right to know about your public employees were discarded in favor of a privilege for the police figures; old fashioned censorship. Of course the matter has been taken to the Supreme Court and will, if need be, go to the federal courts, but for the moment the website is voluntarily honoring Judge Friedman's order. However, that's not quite the whole story. The website publishes outside Judge Friedman's jurisdiction. Actual publication is in California and offices are now in Maryland, states with much more respect for the Constitution than Pennsylvania has. In addition, the former publisher has turned the position over to her son who lives in Canada. There's a lot more freedom of speech in Canada than in Pennsylvania. More interestingly, it's my understanding that the list of guards and parole agents is already available online from a site on a host in New Mexico. It is also my understanding that the same New Mexico website may have acquired all or most of the parole agents' ID photo files. The www.prisoners.com website did not accept an offer from a sympathetic state worker to be given photo files. Such graphics files while interesting and informative, would be enormous and would tax most hosts. The files may have been accepted by another host. Select parts of the files may be available to you as online links. To people outside Pennsylvania the Commonwealth Court will seem like a bizarre institution. It's supposed to be a court in which a citizen can sue the government. Needless to say, the www.prisoners.com website is not part of the government and is not even in Pennsylvania. Judge Rochelle S. Friedman is a 63 year-old Gemini from Pittsburgh. She is one of three women on the Commonwealth Court. You can obtain all the personal information you could possibly want about her online. On the web there are no secrets, no boundries and no censorship. All you've done is to attract attention to the information which you don't trust the citizens to have. While there may be little freedom of speech in Pennsylvania, there are many places where the government respect's its citizens. The web is a microphone which gives everyone a voice, even the citizens who Judge Friedman feels are undeserving to possess information. The web is truly worldwide, hundreds of millions of sources which share, inter-link and enlighten. A tyrant may blindfold prisoners' families in Pennsylvania, but there's always Canada and Mexico, Russia and my friend in New Zealand. On the web, things are published everywhere and no where.
