The Prisoner's Note
About The Guards' Schemes

The following is a transcript of both sides of a holographic note written in pencil. The author was a prisoner at the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon, Pennsyvlania, who overheard guards as they milled around the "Center" loafing. He could not actually see the guards and his identification of the speakers must be questionable at best.

Some of the text of the memo is hard to follow and disjointed, but it is transcribed as closely as possible to the original.

The note is undated and unsigned. It was received by the prisoner who was the intended target of the scheme on 1 December 1998. The author was known, so there was no reason for the writer to identify himself.

Dear ***: 1

Remember what I told you[,] Roger 2 and George 3 in the yard? 4

Well, they
(the guards) were talking the shit again last night. 5 It seems C.O. Clapper oldest of the bros' was on last night. He and Captain Cooper were on last night.

Roger wanted to get the names of people who's 6 cells were caught on fire. He asked Bruce on your block 7 he didn't want to give them up, I know.

They were talking about setting my cell on fire[.] Guards on both afternoon and A.M.talked about using gasoline. Where would they get it? Do you know about Tom Utiz? 8 He is supposed to be in charge of all the fire drills.

You would be better off to name the C.O.'s who haven't talked or know about the A.M. roit 9 than the ones who do. Last night it was C.O.'s

Footnotes:
1 The note is addressed by name to a prisoner go-between.
2Roger Jochen, the lead petitioner in Jochen et al. v Horn et al., 881 MD 1998, the fire safety case before Pennsyvlania's Commonwealth Court.
3 George Feigley 4 Referring to information given on Sunday, 30 November 1998 about guards staging a riot as a way of concealing the murders of Jochen and Feigley.
5Night of 30 November 1998.
6(sic) "whose" is apparently intended.
7Referring to B-Block in the prison.
8Apparently referring to Timothy Yutzy, the prison's Safety Manager. It is preposterous to read the note in any way which would suggest that Yutzy would be involved with anything illegal.
9(sic) "riot" is apparently intended.
10Referring to D-Block in the prison.
11(sic)Perhaps a Freudian slip. "Couch" may be intended.
