Our aging co-founder is a prisoners at the Frackville
prison, a notoriously mismanaged place in East Central
Pennsylvania. The prisoner suffers from several serious health
problems requiring almost weekly medical attention.
The guard force at the Frackville prison has a well deserved reputation for incompetence and unprofessional callousness. Many of them go out of their way to belittle, irritate, and provoke the prisoners. Few of them display good sense or any of the qualities which a "corrections officer" ideally should possess. The following is the text of a complaint from our co-founder about the conduct of one of the guards at the prison, a sergeant who claimed his name was "Reed." His full name is being confirmed before legal actions are undertake. "I suffer from serious and progressive heart disease. The [prison] Medical Department instructed that whenever I need to refill my nitro, I have only to go to any medication-line and/or in an emergency, to inform the staff and the medication will be brought to me. "At about 4:32 this afternoon, I attempted to get nitro by doing as I was instructed. A guard on the walk refused to allow me to go [to the pharmacy]. A sergeant standing at the messhall [entrance] who identified himself as "Reed," loudly and provocatively shouted that I was forbidden to get medication. He flippantly ignored my effort to explain that the medication is life [sustaining.] The sergeant's manner was clearly intended not simply to demean me and express contempt for my serious medical need, but to provoke me into reaction. "While I can't say if he had actual criminal intent to do me harm or if it was simply malice or arrogance, I obviously must pursue this in an appropriate manner. "Guards should conduct themselves in a professional, dignified manner and not try to do harm, nor even to provoke. Respect is a two-way street. [Signed] "I am: George Feigley" |
