There's nothing intrinsically degrading about sex or the human
body, except, perhaps, in the eyes of the materialistically dirty-
minded. A society obsessed with status and material objects,
prefers to eliminate or marginalize those it deems to be of low
status. In the eyes of such a culture, a rape victim has been
degraded (and, if female, possibly impregnated) and should be
ostracized. That explains the guilt and embarrassment felt by
many rape victims in our society.
Not surprisingly, it's common in societies which are obsessed with status and sexual mores not to regard rape in itself to be a crime. Rather, the crime is the sexual act. A man may quite legitimately rape any of his new brides, no matter whether or not she had any say in making the union. It's a price some women have had to pay for the security of marriage. In many such primitive, unenlightened cultures, a male victim of homosexual rape isn't likely to come forward at all. A female rape victim is as likely to be punished for adulatory as the perpetrator is to be punished for raping her. Both may even be put to death. It still happens in some countries to this day. In such cultures, consensual sex is often criminalized while rape is not; going against any sane notion of justice. In the Old Testament, there are many "sins" for which a person may be damned. Rape, in itself isn't one of them; it's hardly even mentioned. The crime of Sodom is interpreted as homosexuality, consentual or otherwise, rather than two angels being almost gang-raped by every man in the town. Excusing sex on the basis of its reproductive function is moral nonsense. The hatred and moral outrage against male homosexuality seems completely misplaced in this age of overpopulation and birth control. Mixed couples enjoy sex without the possibility of producing children. Even the Catholic church advises women on how to enjoy sexual relations without pregnancy. There's no rational reason why consensul sexual pleasure should be deemed evil under any circumstances. Rape, however, is the violation of the rights of another individual. Much of the attention given to rape in male prisons by the status conscious and materialistic conservatives is focused on the sexual desires of the male homosexual rather than on the fact than men are attacked and violated. There are many cases of young gay men who have been convicted of consensual sexual acts, have been systematically raped by other prisoners. The authorities and society at large turn their backs, ignoring the violations because the victim is gay and so, "corrupted." Rape between men who identify themselves as gay or even bisexual is rare. This is because the misunderstandings and mixed messages that are common between men and women are far less likely between men who are thinking along the same lines. A man who identifies himself as heterosexual, however, would not "demean" himself by forming a consensual relationship with another man. Instead, he maintains his "manhood" by subjugating the other man, preferably a younger one. Sadism which is, for the most part, a masculine failing, is pleasure derived from physically subjugating another person. The feminine counterpart, masochism, is pleasure derived from being psychologically subjugated by another, of being the focus of masculine energy. It's an insidious sense of control. Of course, sadism and masochism may be found in either gender, or both at the same time in the same individual. Both conditions are more common as fantasies. It's not uncommon for women to fantasize being raped nor for gay men either. They would never act it out. A woman can readily take precautions to minimize her risk of rape. In almost all the world's cultures the rape of women is a fraction of what it is here in the United States. A young, slightly built, good looking man convicted of a crime, no matter how petty, can't escape the prison environment where he's sexually assaulted, often violently and repeatedly. We're a society that more often only pays attention to women as victims because that conforms to our stereotype of women. We prefer to ignore men who've been victimized because it doesn't conform to the standards expected of men. Contemporary Americans are horrified by the rape of women, but the rape of a man is a subject for mirth. American culture goes out of its way to psychologically dehumpnize males. It's a process which is exacerbated by post-feminism, a doctrine which presents all women as victims. Feminism itself has drifted toward materialistic conservatism regarding all matters of sex. |
