Your Right-to-Know

Pennsylvania politicians and government like to keep secrets from us in the public. They prefer that we don't know what they're doing, what they're stealing and what payoffs they're taking. Corruption is much easier in secret.

Pennsylvania has a very weak law allowing you access to a limited selection of documents that the law calls "public records." Actually we must buy our access to the documents by paying off the agency. As with everything in Pennsylvania, indeed with America, there's a price.

To get records from the Pennsylvania Department of Imprisonment, for example, one must ante-up $15 just for starters. There are all sorts of additional nuisance charges after that. The idea is that the fees will discourage us from uncovering the deeds and misdeeds of our government and you elected these bastards!

The law requires the agency to publicly post the rules and the fees. Of course the Department of Imprisonment doesn't obey the law. They hold law in contempt.

If you wish to inspect public records, you must submit a written request and then wait. Don't expect much cooperation. Remember, your government is ashamed of itself and doesn't want you to know what's going on.

The following menu lists the articles we've published about Right-to-Know requests. If you have stories about the Right-to-Know law, please email them to us for publication.
