America is a nation of addicts. Many of the addictions are
harmful. America's worst addiction is to oil.
Oil is America's "energy drink." It's the sea upon which we've built a self-destructive way of life. But oil is much more evil and destructive than any of our other drugs. It spoils the land and the sea. It pollutes the air and our lungs. The tens of billions of dollars it saps from the society corrupt politics, buy Republican legislators. The money is the excuse for aggressive wars against other nations. The billions buy propaganda which further the myth that we can't get along without oil. Liberal Democrats want to dump the pushers of the oil narcotic. They want to get America off the oil habit. Conservatives and Republicans who have huge money stakes in the oil giants want to expand the pusher, get new sources of oil and expand the industry and its addictions. One thing about conservatives and Republicans, even when they aren't living in a fantasy or a world of their own lies, they are 10 or 12 years behind the curve. In their minds there's a world that never was, peopled by heroes who never were. They have a whole history built on wishes, not facts. They must keep repeating the fantasy just so they can convince themselves. It's pathetic politics. Addiction to oil isn't inevitable. Oil isn't indispensable. If we can break the addiction, we can find sources for energy which don't motivate Bush and other evil politicians to start wars. We can find energy sources which don't pollute and don't degrade our quality of life. Personally, I'd like to see wind converted into something we can use to power cars and warm homes. I'd like to see the action of the oceans harnessed and sunlight used to save the planet. Democrats want to dump the pushers and break the cycle of oil addiction. It may take a while, but look at the ce11phone revolution or the computer revolution. In twenty years both innovations leapt from almost zero to almost 100%. The biggest obstacles to breaking the cycle of oil addiction are big oil companies and the Republicans who slavishly do their bidding. Republicans will do anything for money. Think of the lives that wouldn't have been sacrificed had Halliburton been constrained from inventing the Iraq war, or Exxon-Mobil had a drop of social conscience. These pushers and their political dupes should be controlled. Lets put the "iPod" genius to work replacing oil and the corrupt society it's helped to create.
