Rating The Presidents
By: Tyler Polk

Recent American presidents have had profound influence on each of us and on the whole world. Defendants and prisoners rely upon the courts and the lawmakers, but the presidents have been instrumental in molding both the justice system and the legal system.

A panel of experts and scholars has assessed the last dozen United States presidents. Each man has been evaluated on three criterion: (1) how much good he did (40% of score), (2) how much bad he did (40% of score) and (3) his personal human goodness and altruism (20% of the score). Challenge yourself against the political/historical scholars. Keep in mind that there have been at least two insane men among the last dozen presidents, at least two have been seriously evil and at least two have been intellectual dwarfs. Remember also that popularity has little to do with the quality of a president. The American populace likes some really disgusting things - Big Mac, for example.

For each of the following presidents give a rating of 100 to 0 with 100 assigned to the best of the bunch. The scores of the others should be based on comparing him to the best man.

  • Franklin D. Roosevelt (1929-1945)
  • Harry S. Truman (1945-1953)
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961)
  • John F. Kennedy (1961-1963)
  • Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1969)
  • Richard M. Nixon (1969-1974)
  • Gerald R. Ford (1974-1977)
  • Jimmy Carter (1977-1981)
  • Ronald Reagan 1981-1989)
  • George Bush (1989-1993)
