| Speaking in Mexico City, Pope John II
again comdemned the death penalty as punishment for
crimes. "There must be an end to the
unnecessary recourse to the death penalty,"
the Pope said in English. Mexico and other nations of the Americas have long since abandoned the barbaric use of the death penalty. The Pope's remarks were clearly directed at the United States where hundreds of persons (most poor and minority) have been executed in the past 20 years. The Pope said that the "Church must proclaim the gospel of life and speak out with prophetic dignity against the culture of death." John Paul's teachings are in stark contrast to the savage vindictiveness of right-wing "Christianity." They think that killing people is a good thing. |
