Prisoners' Poetry
By: Monroe Jackson
Volunteer Editor

There's an enormous trove of artistic genius confined behind prison walls, artists and craftsmen, as well as authors and even poets, a surprising number of poets, some quite talented. Even though, as a group, prisoners are poorly educated and their verse is sometimes clumsy, their creations have a certain sincerity and earthiness.

The bulk of prisoner poetry is composed to impress and interest the families, especially the mates, left behind at home. A certain amount simply reflects the gloom and desperation of the prison environment. A little is more philosophical and less physical.

The following menu lists the poetry we've published. While we don't publish everything that's submitted, if you have poetry written by a prisoner, please email it to us for consideration for publication.
