Make The Parole Board
Earn Its
$90,000.00!

By: Sandra Feigley

If a person is being paid, he should be doing the job that he's being paid for. That's true even for state employees. The nine members of the Pennsylvania Parole Board are raking in big pay checks, but they aren't doing their jobs! They are just covering their butts!

What makes this even worse is that each Board Member is paid $90,000.00 a year for sitting on his hands. Well, that's not quite correct, the Chairman, William F. Ward, collects $95,000.00 of our money! We taxpayers pay almost a million dollars a year to these guys and they simply don't do their job!

The job of the Parole Board is to protect the public safety by effectively managing and assisting parolees. It's not their job to duck their responsibilities by refusing to admit prisoners to parole.

The job of the Parole Board is to parole prisoners and to supervise them while they're on parole. The Board is supposed to help parolees and keep them from failing. If the parolee fails, that's the Board's fault. It's the Board's job to assure that parolees succeed. It protects the public safety by how well it guides the people who are on parole.

The present Board obviously has no confidence in its ability to do its management job. It's afraid that it will fail so it makes the prisoners stay in prison.

It doesn't take a Parole Board to let prisoners out of jail. That should be automatic. It could be done by almost anyone. What the Parole Board is for is to manage the prisoners once they're in the community. The present Board obviously can't cope with its duty. To avoid its duty of managing parolees, the Board simply refuses to parole prisoners. So long as a man can be kept in prison, it's that much longer that the Board evades its management obligation.

If the present members of the Board are afraid or unable to cope with the job of managing parolees, they should be replaced. They certainly aren't earning the money that we pay them.

The Pennsylvania Parole Board has become an expensive political puppet for the extremists who lust for revenge. Okay, if we've abandoned decency and we've resolved to let tens of thousands of our citizens languish hopelessly in prison, then why are we paying the Board? Abolish it and save almost a million dollars a year.

The people who are now on the Board are collecting their fat paychecks under false pretenses. They are paroling fewer people than when there were only 5 members of the Board and when they were earning only half as much money. Who are we wasting our tax money on?

Allen Castor, $90,000.00
Barbara K. Decher, $90,000.00
Richard A. Kipp, $90,000.00
Gary R. Lucht, $90,000.00
Nicholas P. Muller, $90,000.00
Sean R. Ryan, $90,000.00
Michael M. Webster, $90,000.00
and Mr. "X," $90,000.00

Lets get rid of these overpaid political puppets and get some Board members who earn their pay by effectively supervising the 14,000 prisoners who should be in the community but who remain in prisons thanks to the ineffectual Board.
