Among the MANY prisons in Pennsylvania is a federal maximum security dungeon at Waymart in far Northeastern Pennsylvania. It uses the name USP-Canaan perhaps to distinguish it from the nearby state prison. Prisons are Pennsylvania's only growing industry. There are well over a hundred in the state!
UPS Canaan is an especially deplorable place. It has an enormous Hole. Most of the prisoners being tormented and punished in the Hole are Hispanics. Apparently, the prison superintendent, an item named Holt is either unable or unwilling to control his staff and to manage his facility. The Hispanic prisoners are simply not safe. They are continually being beaten by other prisoners as well as by the staff. To cope with the staff's failure to keep the Hispanics safe, this Holt guy throws the Hispanics into the Hole. He pretends he's holding them to be transferred to other federal penitentiaries. Often this pretense takes a year or more, always at least a number of months. During that time, the Latin prisoners have lost their privileges, suffer beatings at the hands of the staff and other prisoners and are deprived even of decent exercise. When, in frustration, the Hispanic prisoners asked Warden Holt why they were being held in the Hole, he replied "sanitation!" To this highly professional federal correctional official Hispanics were on a par with bugs or filth. When a victim of the demeaning slur informed us of the verbal and physical abuse, we wrote both to Holt and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Our Editor-in-Chief tried to get Holt's first name for this article. The guard who answered the phone at Canaan hung-up on Doctor Saint George. That's a sample of the conduct of the prison's staff. We have not received a reply from either the prison or the Bureau. We were contacted by a woman name Wilson at the BOP regional office. She said that Holt's first name is Ronnie R. Holt, not Ronald, Mind you, but "Ronnie." We assume he's an adult. We've been unable to get The Department of Justice's official policy on ethnic and racial slurs. We'll be writing to President Obama to seek his views. |
