Houtzdale Prison
Is Less Bad than Camp Hill

By: Natalie Hutchinson

My son was at Camp Hill prison (across the river from Harrisburg in Central Pennsylvania) for a short time. I had enough experiences there to last me a lifetime. The guards were so rude to my family! And we were only visitors.

You talk about breaking rules; the sign says: "NO SMOKING," but there they were, just puffing away. There were a couple of guards who were really nice, too, but not many.

Then my son was moved to Houtzdale. What a change! The place was clean, respectful, very nice, a big step up from Camp Hill.

He thought he would be going to the Quehanna "Motivational Boot Camp." He thinks it would allow him an early release after going through the program.* Now they're suggesting he go to the Chester prison's drug treatment program. That would offer him more of what he needs.

My son doesn't have a drug or alcohol problem. It's just that he and a friend were on the way home from a bar and they were in an accident. His friend was killed. Now he's in jail for 2.5 to 5 years. My son was never in trouble before, not even in high school; never in detention or anything, so it's really hard on us.

I sure look at the legal system in a whole new light!

*Editor's Note: in Pennsylvania no one is "released" (that is paroled) from prison until he or she has served at least the minimum sentence. There is no such thing as "early release."
