Prisoners Need
Internet Access
By: Roberta Webster

We have long lobbied for modern and rational treatment of prisoners. Prisoners should have access to email and the Internet. The prison authorities in Pennsylvania and in most other states are terrified by the prospects that prisoners should be able to rehabilitate themselves. In the passion to keep prisoners ignorant, unemployable and isolated, prison authorities ban internet and email access. They are scared to death that a prisoner might be able to go straight and so endanger the guards' job security (that's what prison is all about, after all).

Recently we got an interesting email from a woman named Melissa. We reproduce it here.

"Hi! My name is Melissa and I just wanted to say that I think they should let inmates have access to the Internet. I mean, my dad has been in prison for 5 years, going on 6. I've only seen him three times. I hardly know where to go to see him because they keep moving him.

"my dad is in there for something he really didn't do. I just wish the court system could actually look at the evidence and notice that he's an innocent man."
