Christmas At Frackville

Just after 6 in the morning the sergeant came on the PA system. It was the twenty-fifth of December. He made he usual repetitious spiel. The prisoners had to stand up to be counted.

Guards are much too feeble minded to count all the way to 2 without confusion. The prisoners have to help out by standing up. A reclining prisoner is invisible.

"Merry Christmas, Asshole!" he bellowed at the end of his speech.

It's a small thing, but typical. If it's not "fucker" or "motherfucker," it's "asshole." The staff isn't just foul-mouthed and contemptuous, it's instructive. The sergeant set the example that prisoners are expected to follow. They should treat others badly. On Christmas they're assholes!
