Sometime ago, I was barred from visiting the state prisons as an official visitor because I wrote about the inhumane conditions at SCI-Camp Hill. Dr. Beard took offense that anyone should find fault with the archiac and barbaric system of locking men in dog pens while they are watched like cartoons on television by men in an enclosed plexiglass office. I agreed to being barred from the state prisons as an official visitor. I never thought that my criticism of the system would be interpreted as a personal attack on Dr. Beard. Oh,silly me, I thought that this would be the end of the punishment. On February 4, my aging, ill husband was suddenly transferred from a medium security prison to a maximum security prison in Pennsylvania, hidden from me, and held in the hole so that he could be protected from the staff. We have been married for 38 years so I naturally was worried about him. Through the efforts of legislators and my own persistence, I was able to locate him. The prison staff lied to me and told me that he was not housed at that prison. Eventually, I was able to see him for 1 hour. (My special thanks to the wonderful people who helped me.) On the day after I visited, February 6, he was suddenly shipped to another prison. It took me several days to realize that he was again moved and a couple of days to find him again. His letters were withheld and my letters to him were seized and held by the prison. I visited on February 19 at Mahanoy. My husband is very ill. He has congestive heart failure and although is only 63, looks to be in his 80's. He is a frail man. I visited for my hour where we had to shout to each other through a piece of glass. With a guard sitting right outside the door to listen to our shots and watch us. My husband sat there with his hands handcuffed to his waist. No phones for communication or even a wire hole to speak through. At this time I found out that he has not received any of his personal property, was told that his money to buy the necessities of life had not been transferred to the prison and surprisingly, he was given a misconduct for writing a letter at SCI-Frackville in which he said that the members of the program review committee were pussies. The objection I guess was to the word pussies or cowards. I hear worse everyday from the school kids walking by my house. Hardly fighting words! I left, the one-hour visit. My husband was transferred to another part of the hole where he is subjected to cold drafts and the incessant yelling of other poor souls. The stress is clearly taking its toll. A recent letter complained of a contant hurting spot in his chest. He is placed in the very circumstances that I complained about at Camp Hill. He has been denied his personal property (UPS verified that it has been at the prison since 2/13) and denied commissary because "his account hasn't been transferred" but it has. It has always been my goal to change the corrections system. It is wrong. It hurts many people and does not correct anything. The only positive thing that DOC does is give jobs to people who otherwise would be unemployed. I had hoped that Dr. Beard would address some of the social injustices but alas, it appears that this is not the case. It is even more scary to realize that he can bar the press or anyone who does not agree with him from seeing and reporting what is really happening at the tax payers expense. Being a bully does not make the one who is bullied a better person.
