We get our share of emails from bigots and extremists. Most are incoherent hatred. Some are coherent and deserving of comment. Most of the worst bigots are snipers, cowards who are afraid to identify themselves.
What follows is part of an email we received from a writer who was afraid to identify herself except for the email address LYN25@aol.com. It is a reply to an answer one of our editors had sent to lyn25's original communication, but we've apparently discarded that first exchange. As a result, some of this isn't very clear. We've edited Anonymous' missive, but we think it's a fairly clear reflection of the mid-set which we oppose and against which we preach. And, obviously, our argument is with the mind-set. We have nothing against Anonymous. We don't even know her.
We must have suggested that Anonymous was full of hate. "Overwhelmed by hate? I don't think so. I don't 'hate' anyone. I do, however, despise those who pray upon the weak [or] defenseless [or] violate the law.
"You are correct. Those in prison are most definitely beneath me! They are the vermin [who] plague our* society! I don't need them to validate my own sense of worth or value because they have no value. For, if they did, they wouldn't be in prison, would they?"
*Isn't it the"vermin's" society, too?
We've finally found her! That unique person who has never violated a law; Saint Anonymous.
