Dear Society

I'm writing this letter in respect to my case, Pennsylvania Commonwealth v. Lorenzo Johnson 1544 C.D. 1996. I was wrongfully convicted of murder and criminal conspiracy on March 17, 1997.

No eyewitnesses testified against me. The Commonwalth's main witness originally told the police that she didn't know anything and was not around when the murder took place. After three months of questioning the story changed.

I was charged with murder for being the supposed lookout. During discovery, I found out that the police had an eyewitness who saw the murder take place. This eyewitness identified the people that murdered the deceased Mr. Williams, but never locked them up.

My alibi witness was incarerated with pending robbery and forgery charges and after a discussion with the detective in the case, recanted and made a statement for the Commonwealth.

At my trial the owner of the bar where the murder took place, stated that I was not present at the time. The bouncer at the bar also testified to this.

One Commonwealth witness received immediate parole based upon a request for same by the Commonwealth because she cooperated in this case. Also, the photo array which was used to identify me showed only two mug shots, one of me and one of the codefendant.

I had been offered a plea bargain of 5-10 years in prison. I refused the plea because I was not guilty. I asked my lawyer to subpoena the eyewitness, Mr. Fluellen, but he was unable to be located.

I am both factually and legally innocent of the crime. The Superior Court has denied my direct appeal, however, one Superior Court Judge dissented and gave an opinion that the Government's evidence was not sufficient enough to show that I conspired with my alleged codefendant to kill the victim.

I was in New York at the time of the murder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to contact me you can write me at SCI-Somerset, 1600 Walters Mill Road, Somerset, PA 15510. Money could also be donated to the address below to help me retain private counsel.

Text from the Superior Court Decision: ...I dissent from that portion of the Majority's decision which upholds the conviction of Lorenzo Johnson for first degree murder and criminal conspiracy as well as the conviction of Corey Walker for criminal conspiracy. I believe that there is no direct evidence, nor can any be inferred, linking defendant Johnson to the death of Taraja Williams nor any agreement with defendant Walker which resulted in Williams' death.
