Compassion American Style

Many scientists, moralists and sociologists report that while, generally speaking, the world as a whole is evolving into a more civilized and decent place, the United Sates is becoming more savage and barbaric. It is evolving backwards into a culture of moral Neanderthals. These authorities believe that the problem may stem from bad parenting.

We get all kinds of bizarre email. Much of it is from guards. Some of it is from other kinds of citizens. It gives us a window into the evolutionary status of the "ordinary" person. Recently we got the following email from a person using the name "Stephanie Carpio."

"Ordinary," may not be an apt characterization. The writer must be affluent enough to have access to a computer, the web and an email address. The writer must be fairly well educated. He/she even properly uses punctuation, even thought the original missive was hard to read because it was keyed in all uppercase (an excess which we have corrected). "Excessive," is a more apt characterization.

We publish the item so that you can share how compassion has evolved in a certain group of Americans.

"I am happy there is a death penalty, and I hope there continues to be a death penalty. Kill them all!!!!!

They don't deserve to live another day!!!!! If they take someone elses [sic] life, then to hell with them."
