Prisoners and their families are among the poorest persons in the state. They are the penniless and needy on the floor of society. But some authorities are so greedy that they lust to bleed even the destitute of what little they have.
More and more, as conservatives, Republicans and other political extremists have gotten their greedy hands on power, prisoners and their families have been seen as helplessly vulnerable and easy to exploit. Like the slave-owners of old, these extremists view prisoners and their families as a financial asset that they can exploit for greed. To them, prisoners exist in order to be destroyed, used-up like coal, cattle or compost. Consider Leroy Freeman's report about conditions at the deplorable York County jail. York is an historic and once proudly dignified area in South Central Pennsylvania. As the rabid extremists have strangled the county, it's become worse and worse. The jail has now taken to exploiting the prisoners for the merest staples of the diet. It's started selling salt to the prisoners for use on their food; 2.5 cents per shake, about 100 time what the salt costs. For a packet of mustard for the rank hot dog or tartar sauce for the ranker fish, the inmate must pay half an hour of prison wages, ten cents, about five time what it costs the prison. For ketchup, eight cents! Equal, six cents! The point is that to the extremists, prisoners are not persons in need of help, rehabilitation and guidance. They are a resource to be exploited and destroyed. |
