My Dear Friend On
Death Row
BY: Irene West iw@epix.net

I have a friend in the State Correctional Institution at Graterford. He's on death row. He's been there for 18 years. Isn't that a little long for the law to decide if he should die?

He's died a little every day, a little more every time he has had a stay overturned, or a stay put into force; one time just 24 hours before he was scheduled to be put to death.

I only know he has a mother, two children and grandparents. They all die a little each time he comes up for the death to take place. They die a little when the stay is once again placed in force.

If the state is going to kill him, why haven't they done it? Why leave someone to live like that for 18 years? Kill him or let him out with the other prisoners.

He may be guilty, maybe not; all I know is 18 years on death row seems a long time. I think the law hasn't been able to come up with enough to kill him yet. What are they waiting for? No one could do this kind of time and be completely sane.

"Please," I beg, release him into the supervision of the regular prison with the other men."

Off death row, prisoners can have people that love them come and visit them. They can have their pictures taken with their loved ones. Maybe the wives can at least kiss the husbands, or the loved ones. A hug would be nice, too. Why make the family of the condemned man pay? The people who love an inmate, love him just as much as ever. If you were the one in our shoes, how would you feel?

I have a dear friend, I'd love to hold just one time.

May whomever reads this have a heart, too.
