Grandma's Cookies
For Honor's Childhood

By: Dad's Mom,

Here are a couple original recipes especially for my granddaughter, Honor - and for her family, too. The first recipe makes delicious cookies. The second makes delicious cookies which also help with teething.

Sugar Imperial Honor

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Cream together:

  • 1/2 cup butter (use the real thing)
  • l 1/4 cup sugar (granulated)

Combine in a mixing bowl:

  • 2 1/2 cups flour (well sifted)
  • l 1/2 teaspoons double acting baking powder
  • l 1/2 teaspoons cocoa powder (a good quality)
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove powder

Gradually mix in:

  • 2 eggs, large (well beaten)
  • l teaspoon vanilla extract (use the real thing)
  • l fresh banana (well ripened and well mashed)
  • A little whole milk to make the batter pliable

Fold together the flour mixture and the creamed sugar mixture. Add a little flour or a little milk whichever is needed to make a thick batter, (peanut butter consistancy). Using lightly floured fingers, shape the batter into balls. The size of the ball controls the size of the cookies. For young children, small is better. Roll the balls in granulated sugar.

Space the balls 3 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 12 minutes depending on the size of the cookies. Cool the cookies on paper towels or a rack.

The cookies may be iced if desired. Using an electric mixer at moderate speed combine:

  • 1/4 pound cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cocoa powder

Let the kids go to town!

Imperial Zwieback Honor

Preheat the over to 325 degrees.

Cream together:

  • 2 cups sugar (granulated)
  • 3/4 cup butter (use only the real thing)

Mix in:

  • 2 eggs (well beaten)
  • 1/4 cup molasses (best quality)
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (use the real thing)

In a mixing bowl combine:

  • 3 3/4 cups flour (well sifter)
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons ginger (ground)
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons ginger powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon clove powder

Mix together the dry ingredients with the butter mixture. Add a few drops of water if necessary to make the mixture pliable and of a heavy consistency.

Using lightly floured fingers, shape the batter into small balls, about the size of a nickel. Place the balls three inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets. Bake until edges of the cookies are well browned and crisp.

The finished cookies should be crisp and toasty. Let toddlers gnaw on them to help them teethe.
