I'm a human rights activist working for the SARANGBANG Group for Human Rights, http://www.sarangbang.or.kr in South Korea. I am assigned to work on human rights in prison.

Sarangbang, directed by Suh, Joon-sik, is a human rights organization established in 1993. It advocates a progressive approach to human rights. We are eager to expand the scope of our efforts to further human rights awareness in every corner of our society. Furthering our aims over the past eight years, our works include human rights education, publication of Human Rights Daily News, organizing the annual Seoul Human Rights Film Festival and operating a resource library.

We are especially concerned about human rights violations in Korean prisons. Since 1999, we've monitored the prisons and tried to improve them. We are almost the only non-governmental organization voicing human rights concerns.

Recently our counseling has been largely concerned with medical services in the correctional institutions. In Korea, the number of doctors in the prisons is very small. In 44 prisons nationwide, only 58 doctors serve about 70,000 prisoners. Korea's population is three times that of Pennsylvania, but its imprisonment rate is only half as high.

Korean medical facilities are quite insufficient and outdated. Most prisoners don't receive adequate treatment. Within the past week there was a case which clearly reflects the situation. A female prisoner was sent to the hospital after being diagnosed with uterine cancer in the terminal state. She hadn't received medical treatment and was simply neglected.

We are urgently looking for resources concerning the medical services in prisons in foreign countries. Readers who have access and can share resources such as legal regulations on prison medical treatment, numbers of doctors per number of prisoners, medical expenses per prisoner, the regularity of medical check-ups and/or other information, are asked to contact me.
