Guard
Hangs Bad Paper

By: Nancy N. Lyster

In criminal parlance a "paperhanger" is a person who passes bad checks. Beauregard Ray, a guard at the state prison at Chester, Pennsylvania south of Philadelphia, has been charged with passing thousands of dollars in worthless checks. With all the money that guards leech from the taxpayers, you'd think he'd have plenty to pay his debts.

The Chester prison is a maniac prison. It's what happens when you cross Republican extremism with phony science. The place is supposedly for drug treatment, but it's a study in oppression and nonsense. It's mismanaged, immature and silly. The administration tricks prisoners into transferring to the dump with a promise of timely parole. It's all phony.

The entire idea of drug abuse and drug treatment is phony. The worst of the drugs is alcohol. All drugs should be legal for an adult to use if he or she's dumb enough to want to kill himself, but it shouldn't be fashionable. Legalizing drugs will reduce crime by at least 50% and prevent hundreds of murders and robberies. Just sell the stuff like aspirin, but with a tax and a registry. If a person wants help to quit, give him or her the help.

Beauregard won't go to jail. Cops and guards slither out of punishment, but it's an interesting case. How would you be treated?
