On December 28, 2000, inmate Gonzalo Mota-Rivera helped
to save the life of corrections officer Edward Brown
at the Federal Correctional Institution at Ray Brooks, New York.
In recognition of Mr. Rivera's heroic actions, the United States
Bureau of Prisons awarded him a lump sum award of $100.00 as a
"token" of their appreciation and then swept the matter under
the rug.
That the Bureau of Prisons ("BOP") places such a trivial value on the life of one of its correctional officers is appalling. The BOP cannot be ignorant of the jeopardy an inmate is put in when he assists a corrections officer. Not every inmate is so compassionate toward his keepers. For his good deed, Mr. Rivera is subjected to danger, torment and ridicule. The Guardian Angel Alliance Network asks for your support to obtain justice for Mr. Rivera. We want to motivate the BOP to award him the meritorious good-time credit to which he is entitled under 18 United States Code 3582(c)(1)(a). Mr. Rivera is a citizen of Mexico and will be deported upon his release. He's serving a lengthy sentence for illegally re-entering the United states. He has no other criminal charges. Ironically, Congress recently recognized the inappropriateness of such long sentences for illegal immigration and reduced the penalty to 2.5 years maximum. Unfortunately, the new law isn't retroactive and doesn't cover Mr. Rivera. He still has 3 years to serve on his sentence. Mr. Rivera has been an active participant in the rehabilitative process and completed a multitude of rehabilitative occupational retraining and treatment programs. Please help Mr. Rivera by writing or phoning the BOP or the Superintendent at the Federal Correctional Institution at Ray Brook, NY (address below). If any illegal alien deserves to be released, you'll agree that Mr. Rivera is an ideal candidate. A man should not be required to serve such a lengthy sentence for what was the victimless "crime" of trying to support his family. Gonzalo Mota-Rivera Reg.
