Garbage for Less!
32 cents A Meal
Prison Serves Discards

By: Downing Keyworthy

The prisoners and guards at the state prison at Smithfield in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania are being fed outdated foods. In order to save a few pennies, the prison buys up outdated meat and foods such as turkey; meat that's scheduled for the garbage heap. Prisoner slave-labor is required to cook up the outdated food and serve it to unsuspecting prisoners and staff.

Kitchen service personnel brag that through scrimping and illegal purchases, the cost of meals have been substantially reduced. They assert that the average prisoner's meal at Smithfield costs a mere 32 cents! Guards' meals cost somewhat more because the guards get special foods. Only the prisoners are left with no alternative but to consume the worst garbage.

The most amazing thing is that the prison's administration does nothing to correct the illegal and dangerous practices.
