Callous Hospital Policy
By: Gail

As I write this, I sit with very sad and angry emotions.

My six year-old son was waiting patiently for his father to phone from prison on Wednesday evening. No call! I thought probably another lock-down so I comforted the innocent child by telling him "daddy's busy and will call tomorrow."

Thursday, again no call. Friday no call.

Worried, I telephoned Graterford state prison only to be told that my husband had been in the outside hospital since the previous Sunday. I insisted on knowing why I hadn't been notified. The "co" [corrections officer, guard] said that he had no idea. I had to call back in the morning.

When I did, I spoke with a captain. While he was nice and seemed caring and compassionate, he refused to give me any information because it would jeopardize his job. He did say that the rules were that I could be notified or I would be allowed to visit only if my husband was in critical condition.

If you have a heart in your chest, can you say that this is fair? It was callous not only to my husband, but also to our son and to me. Why are we being punished?

Can you imagine being shackled to a hospital bed with one or two "co's" watching you 24/7, sick and scared and not being allowed to even get a visit with a loved one. It's just not right! This policy needs to be addressed and now.

I'm not the only wife, mother, child, sister, brother, fiancée affected by this cruel policy. My family will write to every newspaper, senator and politician we can in order to get the rule changed. Others should do the same. You or your loved one could also suffer because of the rule.
