Bullies Taunt Prisoner
By: William Wycherley

You know how the truth can hurt? Sting like a wasp? Well, we must be doing something right! Some Frackville prison guards are reacting to our website with immature retaliations.

We've just begun criticizing the State Correctional Institution at Frackville, a dismal chancre in eastcentral Pennsylvania. It has nothing to do with "correction." It's about giving the easiest state jobs possible to otherwise unemployable riffraff. We've characterized the swollen guard force for being mismanaged or unmanaged, improperly trained and very poorly socialized. Many members of the guard staff (but certainly not all of them) are bulling misfits, better suited as a street gang than as guardians of ethics.

Well, we must have struck a nerve! Like schoolyard bullies, some of the guards have begun an adolescent, but typical retaliation. Milling aimlessly around in idle groups, they shout taunts at our cofounder who's a prisoner in that facility. Name- calling is about as professional as these guys can be. The prison management, if not actually encouraging the pattern of abusive ridicule, condones it with a wink.

It's not unusual for a certain class of emotionally challenged men to behave like immature boys, bars are full of them. What's unusual is to find this many of them as guards at one prison. Jerks make up a fraction of the force at all Pennsylvania prisons. At Frackville, they comprise the majority. One wonders where they all came from.

Like cowards, the guards snipe from behind the prisoner's back, badgering and provoking. We must have touched a nerve to provoke this reaction.
