The water at the state prison at Frackville in Eastcentral
Pennsylvania is polluted.
It's worse after it rains, but don't
worry, we checked.
Officials claim that it only kills you a
little!
At times, especially after a storm, the water gets dark, gritty and slimy. On a few occasion it was the color of black coffee. It was so bad that even Frackville prison which doesn't give a tinker's damn about the well-being of the prisoners had to distribute bottled water. After all, the staff has to drink sometimes. Nobody could be expected to drink from the tap or to take their prescriptions. A prisoner wrote to the prison maintenance manager. Daniel Canavan, the fellow entrusted with maintaining the prison. He wrote back: "lightening caused the contaminated water." Say-what? Lightening? A scientific revelation! The prisoner tried the prison boss, Robert Shannon. This is the official who claimed that the prison was "climate controlled" because there's a fan on a cellblock and his office is nicely air conditioned, isn't it? Superintendent Shannon said: "Mr. Canavar is right." It seems that there's a fellow named James R. Ressler. He's employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection; folks who are supposed to look out for the water supply. Mr. Ressler calls himself a "sanitation supervisor." He certainly must know what he's talking about, right? He wrote that "the drinking water supplied to you is potable." Who would dare to doubt three such emanate state functionaries? As it happens, there's the bothersome business of facts. Outside the Frackville prison, right at Exit 36 on I 81 there was an industrial plant: Metropolitan Mirror and Glass. When they went belly up, it was discovered that poisonous metals and solvents had drained into the ground water; water which supplies not only the prison, but also the village of Frackville and everyone in the area. The toxins include lead, mercury and other heavy metals and cancer causers. We figured that maybe the officials just missed that poison pit, but how about the Titanium Wire site? It's on Morea Road just east of the hamlet of Frackville and close to both the Frackville and the Mahanoy prisons. That site seems to be rife with toxins, too. We haven't even mentioned the maze of coal mines in the area draining a toxic soup into the ground water used by the prison. There are also radioactive gases from the mines dissolving in the water and nuking the natives from the inside out. The good Mr. Ressler reported that some water was sampled. The report said: "time limit for test exceeded" (whatever that means). There was no report on sediment or particulate. There was no report on radioactive gases. One report did admit that some metals were too plentiful. It's unclear exactly who's responsible. Mr. sanitation supervisor mentioned the Schuylkill County Municipal Authority. The feds mention another outfit. The water utility is a state payoff to the local hicks. To get water for the prison, the state subsidizes the whole water utility, giving the neighborhood almost free water. I'll bet they don't realize what they're getting.
