Starting on the first of July, 1996, the authorities began fining prisoners $10. a day for each day the poor persons are confined in the Lebanon County Jail.
Those who are the least able to pay are again being saddled with a governmental abuse. The authorities' aim appears to be to force small offenders to commit more and larger crimes.
In Pennsylvania, such insanity is called justice.
This $10. a day fine is in addition to whatever sentence is imposed by the judge for the offense for which the person is jailed. In most cases, the combined fine of $3650.00 a year plus the imprisonment appears to exceed the statutory limit for the offense.
Money contributed to prisoners by friends and family is seized by the county authorities. The humanitarian aid is taken without due process of law, imposing a punishment upon the contributor for giving his charity.
In Pennsylvania, such insanity is called justice.
The right-wing politicians try to justify these fines as prisoners paying for their own captivity! What perversity! What goes on in these people's minds that they are not only obsessed with punishment but invent tortures? I suppose that this type has been doing this kind of thing since their sadistic ancestors decided that an inquisition might be nice.
