It's Official!
Prisons Are For Employment

By: Nancy N. Lyster

In announcing the opening of yet another Pennsylvania state prison, the Department of Corrections admitted that imprisonment was a make-work project for otherwise unemployable yokels.

Secretary of Corrections, Jeffrey Beard is quoted as saying in part: "This prison...will help to stimulate the economy in a county where jobs have been scarce since the decline of the steel and mining industries."

The announcement went on to brag that in "addition to new jobs for the area, a new $12.5 million sewer system and treatment plant...will serve...homes in nearby towns. Also, the construction of a new 250,000 gallon water tank and booster pump[ing] station will allow for future development of residential areas and commercial businesses in the area."

We have long explained that prisons have nothing to do with the rehabilitation of offenders or a deterrent to crime. There are much cheaper and better ways of dealing with crime. In Pennsylvania the whole "corrections" industry is a way of giving jobs to unemployed rural laborers. Now the Department of Corrections itself admits the fact.
