It took us over 4 years of expense and hard work, but
finally the Commonwealth Court okayed our
publication of the list of names, salaries and so forth of
Pennsylvania prison guards and parole agents.
As it turns out,
the list is much too lengthy (tens of thousands of names) for
us to be able to publish in its entirety at this time.
There are four ways for you to get the information you want
from the list.
The information is actually published by the state government
pursuant to law.
The law, called the Administrative Code of
1929 or 71 PS 234, requires that the government publish a
monthly list naming each state employee and
reporting what department he/she works for his/her gender date of birth voting county employment county biweekly salary and other similar information. We fought for years to publish this information. We wanted to show the public and lawmaker just how many prison guards and parole agents there are and how much they are costing us. It's astonishing to see the list! If you have any legitimate interest in any of the information, we'll try to provide it at no charge. We don't anticipate any improper or illegal use of any of the information. The guards were fearful that you would endanger them or their families if you had information about them. They also expressed fear that you would steal their identity, although I can't imagine why any sane person would want to pretend he/she was a prison guard. We have always crusaded against violence in any form. Similarly, we abhor theft of anything even a guard's identity. We think that when the guards have more difficulty hiding in the shadows, they may behave a little better.
