Another Innocent
Man On Death Row
By: A.S. Anthony

In 1982, a 75 year-old widow, Dorothy Edwards, was raped and murdered. It was a vicious crime. A pubic hair was discovered at the scene of the crime. It didn't belong to the victim and, given her age and status as a widow, it's very unlikely that it could have belonged to anybody except the murderer.

After a while, the authorities in South Carolina where the crime was committed, found a black man to pin it on, Edward Elmore. Mr. Elmore denied his guilt, but nobody paid any attention. He was sentenced to death. America likes to kill its citizens.

In 2000, after strenuous efforts by defense lawyers, DNA tests on the pubic hair proved that it couldn't have come from Mr. Elmore. Most civilized persons would suppose that with that kind of evidence there was real doubt that Mr. Elmore could be guilty. Even if the DNA evidence didn't actually prove him innocent, in the civilized world, it certainly seemed to create reasonable doubt.

Not in America. An American judge, J. Ernest Kinard, Jr. of Greenwood, South Carolina ruled that since the killer left only a single hair at the crime scene, one hair isn't enough" to prove that Mr. Elmore didn't do it or even that he's entitled to a new trial.

Isn't America a great place to live?
