Training Our Young
To Be Savages
BY: Brenda Case

My son received a two year sentence for second degree battery (assault). He's got six months left on his sentence.

During the year that my son's been imprisoned, he's suffered repeated brutality. He was beaten by a gang of four guards while he was handcuffed. And on another occasion, he was taken to the doctor for throwing up blood. Because the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with him, he was thrown into the hole for three days. He'd been throwing up blood before he went to prison. Tests were being scheduled for the problem at the time he went to prison, so I know that he wasn't lying about his condition.

Once, while playing basketball, he hurt his foot. It took them six days to get him to a doctor. His food was broken.

It's very wrong the way the prisons do things. These are our kids who are being treated like animals. I take that back. We don't treat animals like that!

As parents, we feel that we're being punished as much as our children.

When word got out that my son had been beaten, I had six families calling me in one week. Their loved ones had been beaten also, all in one prison in Louisiana. If a person doesn't have a loved one in prison, they can't understand. I didn't until my son went there. Maybe through this website, people will read and find a place in there hearts to try to help the helpless.
