Guard Killed On Duty
First In Twenty Years!
By: Pat Amberson

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of David Bowser, a guard at the notorious Greene state prison near Waynesburg in far Southwestern Pennsylvania. Mr. Bowser's death was not caused by a prisoner. He was run down by a vehicle operated by another member of the prison staff, Linda Casner, a licensed practical nurse.

Being a guard at a Pennsylvania prison is safe work. There are very few injuries and Mr. Bowser's tragic killing is the first staff fatality in about twenty years. By contrast, over 60 prisoners have been killed in that period of time, mostly by guards.

In a effort to further pad the large paychecks of the bloated prison staff with enormous sums in lucrative (taxpayer supported) overtime pay, the prison system has a grandiose scheme for "training" of guards. Avarice is the essential force behind the prison system. The "drills" are mostly recreation for the staff and intimidation for the prisoners. Mr. Bowser and Ms Casner were involved in such a needless "drill" at the time he was killed.

Guards, and especially their disingenuous union like to pretend that their employment is somehow dangerous. It isn't! what guards have to fear are other members of the staff.

Notwithstanding the needlessness of his death, or the greed which underlies it, we regret the death or injury of any person and we extend our sympathies to Mr. Bowser's family. We also share Ms Casner's plight. It must be very distressing for her. She could, no doubt, gotten away with killing a prisoner, but she may have some problems over killing a guard.
