Making Biology A Crime
By: Clide Germann

Since witches were burned and Galileo was persecuted, Christian religious superstition has been at war against truth and science. Nonsensical religious fallacies can't survive in the face of truth. That's never stopped the Christians, especially the extremist right wing fundamentalists and their conservative political partners from legislating against science, particularly against biology and sex.

Nothing terrifies Christians and conservatives so much as other people's sexual pleasure. Biology and the natural systems are anathema to religious dogma.

The last really big battle in this forum was during the middle of the 1900s. It was Christianity against the science of birth control. There were a thousand laws against birth control. It interfered with God's plan!

The Christians have a god who's such a whimp that he's threatened by a few birth control counselors! I think that if I had a god, he'd be more competent than that!

But, with birth control as will all the scientific truths before it, laws couldn't stop the science. Once the birth control pill was invented in the 1950s, the genie was out of the bottle. People were going to enjoy sex and practice birth control regardless of the laws. The conservative crazies hated it!

But religion is nothing if not persistent and conservatives are nothing if not regressively backward looking. The birth control war has mutated into an abortion war. The same passe religiqus and conservative dinosaurs who lost the birth control struggle are out there legislating against abortion.

The abortion laws are nothing compared with the conservative outcry against cloning. Cloning strikes at the very heart of religious mythology. It undermines the superstitions upon which Christianity (and the power of the churches) is based. When man can start making life, where's the place for a dogma worshiping a god?

The conservative and religious crazies are pouring out laws against cloning human beings. It will upset God's plan! But cloning is a completely natural process which science is learning how to master and manipulate. After all, twins are clones and cells naturally clone themselves in regeneration.

Once humans start to be cloned, the genie will be out of the bottle. The laws against it will be meaningless. The laws won't stop the cloning. They will simply drive it underground and to foreign nations with more progressive and scientific governments. Laws against biology simply don't work!

From a purely technical perspective, the cloning of whole human beings is probably not very useful and not nearly as much fun as making them the old fashion way. The real future of human cloning, no doubt lies in the cloning of spare parts for people. Cloning could readily make a new heart, lung, kidney, eye, arm or tooth for the individual who's genetic material was cloned. Many women who've lost a breast to cancer, for example, might like to make a new one with their own genetic material and some scientific ingenuity.

How many years will it take for you to be on the waiting list for a cloned replacement for one of your damaged parts? And who will be right there at the top of the list, with wads of bucks in their fists? why the rich conservatives who now oppose the practice for other people. The nice thing about being a conservative is that you're a hypocrite!

Technically, before the individual human parts can be cloned, science probably has to learn from cloning the whole human animal. Frankly, one of me is plenty and one of Georgie Bush is way more than enough, but, there might be rare instances where a complete clone of a person would be socially beneficial; how about mom?
