Steve Crawford
"Free" At Last

By: P.R. White

It's certainly not news that cops lie. Heavens knows we all should realize that the law enforcement machine manufactures evidence, invents facts and thrives on injustice.

So, here's the true story of Steven Crawford, a man from Harrisburg in corrupt Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Way back in 1970, a little black paperboy, John Mitchell, was murdered for the $32 worth of route collections in his pocket. The boy's body was found in the open garage of the Crawford family home on an ally in Harrisburg. At the time, Steven Crawford was a meer 14 years old.

The law enforcement machine went to work to pin the murder on the teenager. He was only a black boy, after all. To the law enforcement machine that means he's expendable.

For the next three years police lies and inventions were brewed up. Steven Crawford was convicted of the murder and, although just a boy, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. In Pennsylvania that means death; death from old age.

For 28 years Mr. Crawford struggled to prove his innocence. It became clear that he'd been set up. It became clear that the law enforcement machine had lied. It didn't matter, the District Attorneys of Dauphin County did everything in their power to keep Mr. Crawford languishing in prison. To the District Attorney it had nothing to do with justice or guilt or honesty or compassion. It was only a matter of keeping an innocent man in prison at any price; vindictiveness, not decency.

Only after 28 years of wrongful imprisonment was attorney Joshua D. Lock able to ferret out the tampered evidence and show that the cops had lied. Mr. Crawford was released from prison by Judge Joseph H. Kleinfelter. Well, in honesty, Kleinfelter, a former District Attorney didn't actually release Mr. Crawford. After 28 years of prison, in good slave tradition, he was allowed to post $1 in bail to buy his freedom. Even then, it wasn't really freedom. He had to wear an electronic monitor.
