At least 12,000,000 people in America have one or more loved ones
who're imprisoned.
At least a quarter million people in
Pennsylvania, (2 in every 100 citizens) have family or friend
in prison and almost everyone knows someone who's a prisoner.
Imprisonment is Pennsylvania's only growing industry.
Almost all prisoners have someone to call family. Typically, when a person first goes to prison, he or she may get an occasional letter and, perhaps a few visits. Sadly, after a year, two years, tops, the prisoner is pretty much abandoned. It's very rare, indeed for a prisoner to get many visits after she/he has been in prison for any length of time. Family contact by letter, phone and visits is very important to prisoners. It gives them hope and something to look forward to. We urge the families of all prisoners to visit whenever you can. Over the past decade the rabid conservatives have made prison life progressively more tragic and difficult both for prisoners and for their loved ones. Conservatives are haters and destroyers. The present repressive prison administration is openly hostile to prisoners' families. They want to exploit the families, gouge money from them, deprive them of basic rights and humiliate them. We strongly support and urge the adoption of a liberal, family- preserving conjugal visiting policy. Prisoners and their spouses need the same things that all normal married persons need. To survive, marriage needs intimacy. Conservatives lust only for money and domination. In this department are gathered a few articles helpful to
prisoners' families, about keeping in touch and about visiting
the prisons.
