The Crime of Child Molesting?

The more that fanatics, especially women have had an input into the punishment for crimes, the more absurdly sexual offenses have been treated. The most extreme of these are the draconian punishments devised for the dreaded child molester who is now commonly called a "predator." This degree of irrational fanaticism used to be reserved for homosexuality. That was regarded as the height of "unnatural" depravity.

Child molestation is now the hot taboo. We are lobbied to feel (not ever to think) that sexual contact with a child is the worst thing there is. How do you really feel about it?

Suppose you are the parent of a ten year-old daughter. Suppose that your child is assaulted by a 35 year-old man; a terrible thing! From the list below, what do you feel would be the least bad thing that could happen to your child?

All the tragic events in the following list are bad, but some may be far worse than others. Number them for yourself. What is the worst thing in the list that could happen to your 10 year-old daughter, the second worse and so forth?

  • Locked in a closet. Without any other forms of injury, the child is locked in a closet for 3 days and is provided with food and water, but no light or toilet facilities.
  • Beaten with a belt. Without any other forms of injury, the child is savagely beaten with a broad leather strap across her rump and legs until she bleeds profusely.
  • Face burned. Without any other forms of injury the child's face is burned with a cigarette three times a day for three days.
  • Killed. The child is shot through her head and murdered.
  • Arm broken. Without any other forms of injury, the child's arm is broken with a hammer and the bone protrudes.
  • Raped. Without any other forms of injury the child is talked into submitting to intercourse.
  • Finger amputated. Without any other forms of injury, one of the child's fingers is cut off.
  • Starvation. Without any other forms of injury, the child is deprived of food and water for five days, but not killed.
  • Oral sex. Without any other forms of injury, the child is subjected to cunnilingus.
  • Taunted. Without any other forms of injury, the child is subjected to taunting and teasing about her appearance and her parents for twenty minutes each day for ten days.

None of us are likely to want any of these things to happen to our child. Still, a sane parent must judge the real amount of harm done. How long the injury would last and how the child could be helped to recover. Perhaps some things are far less bad and more "natural" than other. Send me your thoughts.
